“A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.
You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.”
Doctors, nutritionists, specialists, teachers and parents for years have drilled that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We are told we need to have a balanced diet, so that we can refuel after an evening in nocturnal bliss sleeping. We need to fuel up so we can go about our school day, work day, toddler day, stat at home parent day and just in general function until it is time for us to rest again.
What if I told you we need to nourish our spirit the same way we nourish our carnal beings. David emphasizes here that he earnestly searches for God, thirsts for God, he will glorify God and sing him praises. All that happens in the early morning.
He speaks of glorifying God, quenching his thirst with God, he praises the almighty God. a Spiritual Breakfast. He starts off his day enriching, fueling, powering in his spirit for the tasks yet unfolded for his day. The word of God, maintaining a relationship with God in the morning is just as important as that bowl of cereal, oatmeal, bacon egg & cheese, fruit parfait or anything else you have for breakfast.
The same way we eat to refuel our body after a nights rest, we need to refuel our spirit with praise, worship and manifest on Gods word. You will have a better day by being spiritually able to face the tasks before you.
God I thank you for your word. I thank you for another day. Lord I lift your name high and rejoice for all you’ve done in my life. Thank you for another day, another opportunity, another moment to fill myself up in your word and presence. Thank you for allowing me to glorify you. Thank you for your nourishment, for your bread, your blood, allowing me access to your word to meditate in. Just as my flesh need food for nourishment, my soul needs you for nourishment. I pray for you reading this. May you quench your spirit with his word. May we all like David wake up with the hunger that only God can satisfy. May our enriching of our spirit build on the relationship we are building with God. May we always remember breakfast for your soul is just as important as the breakfast needed to start your day. Amen
