Days Numbered

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
(Psalm 90:12, NIV)
I don’t know if you noticed but every passing moment of our lives are systematically calculated in some way shape or form.
Think about it.
I wake up everyday between 4&430 am local time.
I begin my daily routine : i thank god for another day, I wash up and I get ready for my work day.
Around 5-15am I begin to wake my kids and do the same routine with them
At 530 I wake up my husband so he can start his daily routine
615 my kids are cleaned, dressed and breakfast ready, I also begin to prep their bags for their daycare provider.
At 630 the 4 of us are in the car exiting the driveway.
7 am we reach the other side of town and I head on the train to the city, while my husband drops the kids off and goes to work.
730 I arrive my job
745 I eat breakfast
8am my shift begins
4pm my shift ends
445-515 I pick up my kids
You get the idea.
Our days are calculated.
What do we get out of this?
How does this makes us wiser as indicated in the scriptures.
God knows the exact minute and hour to when our journey here on earth ends. He knows your story, he has seen your future, he knows your destiny, it is up to us to want it to ensure we reach it.
So let’s take a look, our days are numbered, just as this verse described. They are numbered to make us wise the scriptures state. There are 60 seconds in a minute. There are 60 minutes in an hour, there are 24 hours in a day. There are 365 days in a year (except for leap year where we have 366days) nonetheless we see how we have systematically and scientifically numbered our days. Every moment is accounted for.
How will systematically numbering them make us wiser?
To answer this I am going to mention to you bits and pieces of lyrics from one of my favorite Broadway plays. I hope to save myself embarrassment so that I do not end up singing it aloud, but as mentioned I will be extracting pieces of this:
Seasons of Love – Rent
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Moments so dear
How do you measure – measure a year?
In daylights – in sunsets
In midnights – in cups of coffee
In inches – in miles
In laughter – in strife
In – five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure
A year in the life
Measure in love
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Journeys to plan
How do you measure the life
Of a woman or a man?
Measure, measure your life in love
Seasons of love
This song breaks down a whole year in minutes. We are so caught up in ourselves, so caught up in life, so caught up in our responsibilities, that we tend to over look the simple things. We tend to over look the fact that yes our days are numbered. #Yolo – you only live once.
We tend to forget how precious and
fragile our time on earth really is.
We tend to forget in those moments we make memories, with those memories we learn lessons, in those lessons we learn in life makes us wiser.
It is so easy for us to allow things to take up our time. It is so easy for us to loose sight of many things. It is so easy for us to sleep the day away, so easy for us to let things fester up and bother us. We need to pick our battles wisely. Something’s are worth fighting for. Something’s are best left as water under the bridge.
The point I’m trying to make is our lives are gifts. We can’t let things that are trivial to our lives consume us.
Each day is a gift.
Each day is an opportunity to start anew.
Each day is an opportunity to make memories and treasure the finer things in life.
Each day our actions, our memories and our experiences make us wiser.
If we focus on the less meaningful things we will loose sight and miss the beauty each day god had granted us.
So let’s think about the five hundred twenty-five thousand Six hundred minutes, let’s think about the moments we waste our time with which could be used glorifying the lord, moments that can be used to edify ourselves and others, moments that can be used spending time with our loved ones, moments that can be used preaching, singing, in fellowship, with those we love and care for.
I encourage you today. Don’t let the precious moments of our lives pass away. Don’t let any moments drift away. Be wiser, use your time wisely. Don’t wait until it’s too late to say I love you. Don’t wait until it’s too late to make a memory. Don’t let life pass you by, #YOLO. Make every moment count in your life. Make those experiences make you wiser.
Father God I thank you for this day, this day you not only have given me an opportunity to start a new, but you’ve given me another opportunity to do your good deeds. You’ve given me another opportunity to create memories and love out experiences which will make me wiser by the end of the day. I want to focus on the many blessings you have thus provided and not the trivial things in life. I want to focus my time on my loved ones and your deeds m.i want to keep you always close at heart with every action I do and every moment of this day. Amen
